Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

By Good Evening at 2009-04-23 01:31:26
Pelvic inflammatory disease affects the reproductive organs of many women. It is an infection that can be caused by many different sexually transmitted diseases, including gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Pelvic inflammatory disease can lead to infertility.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, or PID, is generally caused by bacteria entering through the cervix into the rest of your reproductive organs. The most common culprits are the bacteria that are associated with STIs which is why it is so important to be careful of the choice of your sexual partners. Having only one partner who has only you as a partner is your best choice. However, STIs are not the only causes of PID.

Ectopic pregnancies are pregnancies that occur outside of the uterus. An egg implanted in a fallopian tube can be a dangerous, even life threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. Scarring inside the fallopian tubes and uterus can happen very quickly, so you should be aware of the signs and symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease, particularly if you are of a reproductive age.

Other Sources of PID Infection

PID can be caused by many types of bacteria, but conditions are normally caused by bacteria from the two sexually transmitted infections, Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhea. Both infect a woman's cervix making it easier for bacteria to enter reproductive organs. This can happen if the cervix has been damaged, if a woman has had PID before, or if the cervix has been opened during a surgical procedure. PID caused by bacteria from Gonorrhea can cause severe symptoms such as high fever and abdominal pain.

Now, the nutrients that help. Beta-carotene (preferably from foods, like carrots, pumpkins, or acorn squash) helps the cells of the cervix resist reinfection with the bacteria associated with PID and also helps them resist HPV (human papillomavirus).

Women who have a number of different sexual partners are at most risk from PID. If you suspected of having it, you can consult a doctor for the necessary tests eg. urine, blood test, a swab at the infected area to test for the bacteria. Both partners should be tested. The infections can be treated by antibiotics prescribe by the doctor. If the pain doesn't goes off, consult the doctor again. Chlamydial and gonorrhoea tend to coexist, thus it is best to treat both infections together. After the antibiotics course (takes 4-5 days) has been completed, you should be retested to ensure you are clear of the infections before making love again.

What could be worst is that, if the tubal abscess opens or leaks from the end of the tube, the ovary at that end of the tube may stick to the tube and become the far wall of another abscess cavity, which is now bigger and more destructive. This is called a tubo-ovarian abscess and it causes a complete obliteration of fertility on the side it occurs, since the tube, ovary and all its eggs are destroyed.

Treatment of PID includes antibiotics to fight off the infection. If scarring and damage have occurred and you are trying to conceive, then laparoscopic surgery may be necessary to clear away scar tissue and restore your ability to conceive.
