Ambulatory Phlebectomy

By Good Evening at 2009-06-16 00:52:55
Everybody desires a soft and velvety complexion. Only a healthy skin gives these attributes to the human body. Varicose veins and spider veins damage the skin beauty radically. Enlarged, distended and twisted superficial veins, the varicose veins are both a medical and cosmetic problem. One suffering from the condition of varicose vein goes through the painful experience of ulceration, inflammation and hemorrhage. Also look of varicose vein area becomes distracting by the presence of these bluish and swelled veins.

Enlarged veins that are usually found on the legs, although they can be found in other places, can be dark purple, blue or flesh-colored. These veins may have an appearance of twisted, bulging cords raised on the leg. The most common places on the legs for varicose veins to be found are the backs of the calves or on the inside of a leg.

The precise cause of these unwanted vessels is still the subject of investigation. However, we believe that they develop as a result of a complex interplay of genetic, hormonal and environmental factors. There is often a strong family history for their formation. You might find, for example, a mother, daughter and sister suffering the same problem. Elevated estrogen levels appear also to aggravate the problem.

Factors which can increase the person's likelihood of developing varicose or spider veins include:

• Increasing Age
• Having family members with vein problems or being born with weak vein valves
• Obesity, leg injury, prolonged standing and other things that weaken vein valves.
• Sun exposure, which can cause spider veins on the cheeks or nose of fair-skinned people.

Varicose veins treatment

The treatment of varicose veins varies per patient. The most common surgical treatment includes stripping of the long and/or short saphenous veins. Treatment programs such as sclerotherapy, laser surgery, surgical vein stripping, ambulatory phlebectomy and endoscopic vein surgery are tailored to each individual. Patients may receive a combination of treatments, and most patients participate in some self-care therapies as well. Self-help measures - such as wearing elasticised compression stockings, regular exercising, controlling and if necessary your losing weight, not wearing tight clothes, avoiding long periods of sitting or standing - can ease pain and prevent varicose veins from getting worse.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is where surgery is done with multiple incisions are made along the vein and it is taken out by using surgical hooks. This is usually not done for the spider veins, but more for the varicose veins. Lasers are also being used to treat varicose veins, but it is not necessary for spider veins.

Several associations have also been in existence for quite some time to support the study of phlebology. The American College of Phlebology was established in 1985 and has been very actively involved in the study of varicose vein disease ever since. Not only do they promote the education of doctors, nurses and others in the medical field but they also serve as a knowledge source for the general public.

Possible adverse effects

Moderate to heavy bruising can occur which may take about two weeks to disappear. Infection or phlebitis (inflammation of the vein) if it occurs can be treated with an antibiotic or an anti-inflamatory. Numbness of the lower leg or shin due to swelling and pressure may occur.
